Our health needs a culture of collaboration

Health is shaped by many interconnected factors, so transforming health can only come through working in an interconnected way. Diverse minds, perspectives, and skills are brought together in our dynamic internal teams and collaborations inside and outside of our industry. A shared purpose and partnerships that cross disciplines and borders are helping to co-create potential solutions that may help address the biggest health challenges people, society, and our planet face. Solutions that can be both equitable and sustainable.

We partner with academia, governments, policymakers, peer companies, biotechs, scientific organisations and patient groups to name a few, to access the best science, stimulate innovation and accelerate the delivery of new medicines to address unmet medical needs. And by working across borders, sectors and communities, we can accelerate more sustainable healthcare and improve health equity around the world.

Collaborations such as the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies are already generating evidence and sharing policy recommendations across key areas. The recent PHSSR global report provides several long-term evidence-based recommendations and strategies to strengthen country healthcare systems with global health impact. We must sustain and bolster this work, engage new, diverse partners and ensure it is made available to leaders and their communities.

The complexity and magnitude of the problems facing health systems demand collaboration. Partnership is crucial for sustainable transformation of healthcare at scale, as it is only through diverse perspectives that we can truly understand solutions to these challenges. Meaningful change requires sustained commitment and a joined-up, multi-sector approach across stakeholders to share learnings and expertise. This is especially true when it comes to identifying and implementing bold solutions to ensure we have sustainable financing frameworks for health systems.

Alliances, acquisitions and collaborations with peer companies, biotechs and academia enable us to enhance our portfolio and pipeline across our therapy areas. For example, our acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals combines Fusion’s expertise and capabilities, including their industry-leading radiopharmaceutical R&D, pipeline and manufacturing capabilities, with AstraZeneca’s leadership in small molecules and biologics engineering to develop novel radioconjugates. We expect this acquisition to be a major step forward in delivering our ambition to transform outcomes for patients.

We are deeply proud of our collaborative work with patient advocacy groups, healthcare professionals, and educational institutions among others, to promote health literacy, raise awareness of disease prevention and support initiatives that empower patients to manage their health effectively. This includes our Young Health Programme, where we work with over 60 non-profit organisations around the world to empower young people to manage their health and help prevent chronic diseases.

By harnessing our collective knowledge, expertise and resources, we can push the boundaries of science to develop transformative health solutions that improve the lives of people around the world.

Good health is what we all desire for ourselves and our loved ones but achieving something this significant for as many people as possible can’t be accomplished through a single lens, or by acting alone. Science is most powerful when we see health as integral to people, society and our planet. When we continually push forward, progressing our understanding of disease. And when our talented teams are part of like-minded collaborations and partnerships, co-creating innovative solutions that transform care. Together, this is making a big difference to our health.
